An increasing amount of the content used on media channels is gathered by freelancers, with many putting themselves in harms way to get the “piece”. Whether in the aftermath of a natural disaster or in a conflict zone a lack of planning can have catastrophic consequences.
Our Safety Awareness Training for freelancers course is designed to set the foundations of good safety practice for this fluid working group.
This one day Safety Awareness Course covers both ends of the task, pre-deployment and the possible after effects of covering nature disasters or wars.
The course can be adapted to meet the specific requirements of the delegates but typically covers:
Completing risk assessments
Kit and equipment requirements
Insurance considerations: personal & equipment
Information security: written and electronic [including social media]
Medical requirements: personal health issues; travel health; first aid kit contents
Emergency planning: injury; illness; lost; overdue
Post traumatic stress
What is Post traumatic stress [PTS]; when is it PTS; why does it happen; why are media workers affected.
How to recognise PTS: in colleagues; in contributors; in yourself.
Coping strategies: for colleagues; for contributors; for yourself.
Interviewing victims of trauma.
Sources of help: free; at cost.
All training is conducted to reflect in house policies and procedures and/or equipment.
The course is designed to promote good practice in the media sector, particulary amongst the freelancer community. Many of the topics covered in this course can be expanded upon with further training available.

Hostile environments training course for media is aimed at providing skills and knowledge to help media workers prepare for and function within potentially hostile environments.
Lazarus Training has preset designed hostile environments training courses or can produce bespoke training covering hostile environments and/or remote first aid. We can tailor the training to reflect both high risk and medium risk environments.
Our training team has recent experience on the ground in Afghanistan, Pakistan, West Africa, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey/Syria border, East Africa and Thailand. We don’t just teach this stuff, or rely upon “old” stories from our army days, we continue to deploy, with staff in Afghanistan in November and South Africa in December.
At Lazarus Training we pride ourselves on listening to the client and working with them to cover their specific needs, so all group course bookings are treated as bespoke events. Course content is varied to meet the needs of each client group but would typically cover:
Planning before the trip
Selection of kit and equipment
Dealing with people, conflict and aggression
Weapon and explosive awareness [please note this isn’t training you to use weapons]
Explosive Remnants of War & Mines
Vehicle and driver safety
Hostile environments first aid training
Post traumatic stress

Media first aid training is a specialist topic, in which Lazarus Training has years of experience. Having worked closely with large media organisations and regulating bodies, we can now offer a range of media first aid training courses covering all the requirements of the industry or sector.
The basic level is the First Aid in the Office or Studio course, this one day course is designed to meet the requirements of media staff in static locations, with medical help nearby but who may be mixing with the public.
Our First Aid on Locations course is just that, two days of practical media first aid training, covering the basics up to dealing with a road traffic collision. This course is highly practical, including the use of training scenarios with fake blood and injuries. This course includes the First Aid in the Office or Studio qualification.
Our First Aid in Remote Locations lasts three days and builds upon the First Aid on Locations course. Designed for groups working remote from medical assistance this courses includes travel health and prolonged care of someone injured or taken ill.
All our training is focused on the individuals attending the course and their likely working environment. We ensure that the training reflects the needs of the delegates and the first aid equipment they will have access to [or not as the case may be]. Our training is well known for its practical nature and is summed up in our #trainforreal ethos.
Assessment is carried out during the course, meaning there is no final written exam- as there isn’t in real life. Delegates need to be prepared for the physical nature of the training and need to wear older clothing which they won’t mind getting dirty!
If you want to know more about us visit the about us pages of this website, or view the training scenarios and simulations page to see about our training. Otherwise give us a call on 0800 242 5210 to discuss your media first aid training needs.
The use of tourniquets in pre-hospital care is now widely accepted, at least it is within “sensible” circles and an increasing number of our media clients are including them into their first aid kits.
Because of this change in the contents of issued first aid kits the use of tourniquets is a staple part of many of our first aid courses [such as our FPOS I and media first aid training] and we therefore take quite an interest in new products hitting the market. As we become aware of new models we like to put them thorough a series of tests to check the ease of use and ease of training, two areas of specific interest to us, with the later often being overlooked in most online reviews of new tourniquets.
You might have noticed our “Tourniquet testing” videos gradually appearing on our YouTube Channel [see below], but the latest addition which has literally just arrived is the RATS – Rapid Application Tourniquet System. We have been following [with some amusement] the CATS versus RATS debate online. Our favourite line so far being “CATS eat RATS”. Based on this alone we had to check out the Rapid Application Tourniquet system and include it in our tourniquet testing.
We will be uploading a product review and tourniquet test in the next few days, so keep checking here or subscribe to our YouTube Channel [you can do this by clicking here].
If you are aware of new tourniquets hitting the market that you think we should look at [or you have a new tourniquet coming out], drop us a line on email@example.com to have it included in our tourniquet testing.
